Description |
Rosary Beads. A Japanese Buddhist rosary (o-juzu) of eighteen blue and white Hizen porcelain beads strung on a silk cord ending in a tassel. Each bead originally had gilding in a design of birds or flowers. Hizen was a province which produced fine porcelain. Prayer beads are a traditional tool to count time while meditating using mantras. Juzu is a circular string of small beads, usually 109 beads although shortened versions are also common. Buddhism was first introduced into Japan in the 6th century. |
